Swimming at God's Bridge Travel Guide

Swimming at God’s Bridge (Puente de Dios): What You Need to Know

While the Akchour Waterfalls gets the majority of the tourist hype, locals will constantly tell you to head in the opposite direction toward God’s Bridge (known locally as Puente de Dios). This towering natural rock archway is a geological marvel, spanning over 25 meters across a sheer river gorge.

Quick Facts: God’s Bridge

Swimming at God's Bridge (Puente de Dios): What You Need to Know
  • ⛰️ What is it? A massive, naturally-formed bridge made of red rock suspended high over the Farda river.
  • 🥾 Trail Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
  • ⏱️ Hike Time: Only 45 minutes from the central Akchour trailhead.
  • 🏊 Best Activity: Swimming in the crystalline blue waters below the arch.

Two Ways to Experience the Bridge

When you arrive at the Akchour trailhead taxi drop-off, take the path to the right up the Farda River. As you hike, you will quickly encounter a choice: hike above the gorge or wade through the riverbed.

1. The High Trail (Hiking above the arch)

If you choose to hike the dirt path hugging the steep canyon wall, you will look down upon the gorge. After 40 minutes, you will actually walk right over the natural bridge! The view looking down into the 25-meter deep chasm is dizzying, offering a brilliant perspective of how the river carved the stone over millions of years.

2. The River Trail (Swimming below the arch)

If you visit during the hot summer months, the best way to experience God’s Bridge is from the bottom up. Bring water shoes, because this “trail” involves literally wading through the riverbed. You will rock-hop your way through the gorgeous canyon until the massive natural bridge towers above your head like a cathedral roof. The water here forms deep blue swimming pools. It is incredibly refreshing, highly photogenic, and surrounded by little cafes serving tagines right on the riverbank.

Pair this half-day excursion with a relaxing evening at a premium accommodation like Casa Olea Vista to maximize your Chefchaouen holiday.
